AASHTOWare Bridge® Design and Rating Release Notes

April 2023 

Legacy System End of Life

BrDR Version 6.8.4 Sunset Date: June 30, 2022

Version 6.8.4 is the last release of the legacy system and maintenance, specification updates, and support ceased on June 30, 2022. The AASHTOWare Bridge® Task Force strongly encourages users to upgrade to the modernized platform as soon as possible.  

Program Limitations

If you are using the Educational version of AASHTOWare Bridge® Design or AASHTOWare Bridge® Rating, be aware that you may only create bridges with the following limitations:

AASHTOWare Bridge® Design and Rating Version 7.4.1 – Resolved Incidents

The following Support Center incidents in the AASHTOWare Bridge® Design and Rating Technical Support website are addressed in this patch:

  1. BSSD-4056 – Improper handling of ‘Must consider user input lateral flange bending stresses’ control option for GFS model file created in v7.4.

  2. BSSD-4067 – Floorbeam LL incorrect in truss systems with more than 2 trusses.

  3. BSSD-4068 – Unconservative ‘Distribution Factor-Line Girder’ analysis results for short span lengths.

  4. BSSD-4072 – 7.4/7.3 Floorbeam bracing issue – incorrect unbraced length is used.

  5. BSSD-4089 – Unable to Define Floorbeam Members-Floorbeam Member alternative window.

  6. BSSD-4102 – AASHTO Timber ASD engine beam weight is being doubled for percentage of additional self-weight input.

  7. BSSD-4108 – Influence surface for shear at support does not peak at that support. 

  8. BSSD-4128 – For the AASHTO Timber LRFR engine the timber deck LL analysis actions change when additional trucks are included.

 

AASHTOWare Bridge® Design and Rating Version 7.4 - New Features

The following enhancements and additions have been added to AASHTOWare Bridge® Design and Rating in Version 7.4:

1. Ability to specify flange lateral bending stresses for analysis – This enhancement allows flange lateral bending stresses to be specified at diaphragm locations for the design and rating of steel multi-girder bridges.

Ability to select the Bridge Management (BrM) bridge data fields to synchronize with BrDR.

 

AASHTOWare Bridge® Design and Rating Version 7.4 – Resolved Incidents

The following Support Center incidents in the AASHTOWare Bridge® Design and Rating Technical Support website are also addressed in this release:

  1. BSSD-2423 - Mild steel on tension side used in LRFD article 5.7.3.4 considers the neutral axis location instead of 0.5 * section depth.

  2. BSSD-3138 - Prestress Design Tool - Dropdown boxes in grids aren't accessible using the keyboard.

  3. BSSD-3452 - Design Tool grid paste does not work correctly when copying from Excel.

  4. BSSD-3453 - Change the grid behavior in PS and Steel Design tools to match BrDR.

  5. BSSD-3544 - LRFR spec check for bearing resistance at bolt holes does not use the correct Lc edge distance for web plates.

  6. BSSD-3572 - Deleted load case for stringer continues to be used for stringer reactions when evaluating floorbeam ratings for GFS and FS structures.

  7. BSSD-3573 - Reaction and shear values do not match for cases where LL "By Axle" option is selected.

  8. BSSD-3591 - Copy and Paste feature from Excel to the MCB shear wizard.

  9. BSSD-3598 - Post-tensioned prestress force not using the correct losses at point of section change.

  10. BSSD-3626 - For MCBs on the 'Web Shear Reinf' window, the start distance is not updated when the 'Input reference type' is toggled.

  11. BSSD-3668 - Typical Section schematic does not display for horizontally curved structure - throws System Error

  12. BSSD-3688 - Inventory shear capacity being used for operating capacity for permit vehicles for allowable stress rating.

  13. BSSD-3698 - Report generated for Spec Check Details shows different hours for analysis time and report time

  14. BSSD-3715 - 3D wind load is not included in spec check results

  15. BSSD-3716 - Add warning to 3D analysis if wind is applied but diaphragms are not present

  16. BSSD-3726 - For MCB's, provide a warning message when rebar lengths are entered with a zero length.

  17. BSSD-3746 - System Error Message - Missing Bridge Explorer Grid Row, Find Button Disabled

  18. BSSD-3753 - When I was analyzing Culvert using LRFR method, warning message displayed (in red) with the word 'Error'-Should be a warning.

  19. BSSD-3765 - BrR not resetting stringer DL reaction loads on subsequent analysis of Truss structures.

  20. BSSD-3770 - Use distance tolerance entered under system defaults window for staggered diaphragm check when assessing moment redistribution and Appendix A6 applicability criteria.

  21. BSSD-3771 - Deterioration profile not plotting in floorbeam & stringer schematic and correct features of deterioration profile for girders.

  22. BSSD-3772 - BrD RC Pile Bent Pier - pile embedment depth and point of fixity being assigned to only first pile and not all piles in group.

  23. BSSD-3778 - ASD override factors entered on the Factors tab of the member alternative window are not being considered.

  24. BSSD-3779 - When changing to an integral pier, remove the spring constants.

  25. BSSD-3785 - General Preferences window - Open template does not load the template.

  26. BSSD-3789 - AASHTO ASD timber engine ASR issue with adjacent truck with regard to bearing ratings.

  27. BSSD-3800 - Case Sensitive password-Make all initial usernames lowercase

  28. BSSD-3801 - PSDT - Line Girder export to BrDR incomplete deck information transfer

  29. BSSD-3803 - Creating a new concrete material on RC Tee Cross Section window throws a System Error

  30. BSSD-3808 - Timber bearing wet service factor for southern pine 2"-4" thick incorrect if left blank in Adjustment Factors tab on the Deck window.

  31. BSSD-3810 - Improve validation and error message when MCB web stirrup is outside the web.

  32. BSSD-3812 - Deck thickness for RC Tee beam appears to only be used for schematic.

  33. BSSD-3813 - LRFR Analysis does not complete for this Truss Floor System bridge; infinite loop when 'Exclude permit lane load from permit vehicle location' is selected on the Vehicle Properties window.

  34. BSSD-3815 - Issues with Bearing Stiffener Location window for interior supports and right support; incorrect sketch for interior and right supports, X input not hidden for interior supports.

  35. BSSD-3816 - Deck sawn timber wet service factor for bearing is incorrect for a deck thickness >4".

  36. BSSD-3818 - Glulam Timber Deck - LLDF uses nominal width for deck thickness from Nail laminated screen.

  37. BSSD-3820 - MCB top interior web fillet checkbox in Structure Cross Sections window is not saved properly.

  38. BSSD-3823 - Floorbeam member alt analysis LFD inventory/operating RFs are different when the same vehicle is set to LRFR permit.

  39. BSSD-3826 - PS transformed moment of inertia is incorrect in the transformed section properties article.

  40. BSSD-3828 - System Error when closing BrDR after viewing the vehicle schematic in the BrDR library.

  41. BSSD-3830 - RC Culvert Reinf window error converting between US and SI units.

  42. BSSD-3835 - On the MCB Structure Cross Sections window, the Slope entry method is not saved or used properly.

  43. BSSD-3838 - Diaphragm and lateral bracing spec check failure for double angle and WT diaphragm and lateral bracing elements in old LRFD spec versions

  44. BSSD-3841 - Incorrect Steel Girder Section Being Used to Compute Certain Parameters for LRFD Shear Stud Strength Design

  45. BSSD-3842 - For the Steel Design Tool, Interior Beams won't design while exterior beams are designed.

  46. BSSD-3843 - 'Flexure' Incorrectly Reported as Limit State Label for Service Overload Provision in LRFR Analysis for Steel Girders Starting in v7.2

  47. BSSD-3847 - 3D LRFD Prestressed Analysis Failure-System null reference exception

  48. BSSD-3851 - Rating factor is showing units of Kips in Article 6A.5.8. Rating factor should be unitless.

  49. BSSD-3855 - LRFD centrifugal force criteria being applied to vehicles assigned to Legal & Permit categories for an LFR analysis .

  50. BSSD-3864 - Error saving file after entering web loss in deterioration profile window for Continuous LL-Simple DL steel girder superstructure.

  51. BSSD-3866 - Timber Analysis fails when regression data is checked.

  52. BSSD-3868 - LLDF override rule for shear skew correction.

  53. BSSD-3873 - Curved Girder Lateral Forces issue for horizontally curved girders

  54. BSSD-3881 - Error setting steel brace moments for version 7.3 but not in 7.2

  55. BSSD-3883 - Missing detailed reports in 3D analysis for permit truck with permit lane load gapped at the truck location.

  56. BSSD-3890 - Floorbeam analysis issues when stringer reactions are saved.

  57. BSSD-3893 - Framing plan: Diaphragms tab for curved structures; input changes not saved.

  58. BSSD-3895 - HS20 Truck + Lane Issue - FEM - automatically adding a lane load to the HS20 Truck. Should be separate.

  59. BSSD-3896 - Load rating tool - LRFR analysis results do not match the Bridge Explorer analysis results.

  60. BSSD-3902 - Steel beam projection at start of beam is being set with the end of beam value.

  61. BSSD-3912 - Various timber engine issues - moisture and time factors

  62. BSSD-3921 - System error triggered when adding a stringer member alternate for truss-floorbeam-stringer & floorbeam-stringer system superstructures.

  63. BSSD-3933 - Incorrect 'J' (polar moment of inertia) section property for steel girder top and bottom flange beam elements in FE model

  64. BSSD-3936 - Bearing Stiffener window incorrect validation message for negative offset for steel beams simple for DL, continuous for LL.

  65. BSSD-3937 - Incorrect validation message for 3D analysis; displays "Line girder engine validation failed" should be "3D engine validation failed".

  66. BSSD-3938 - When migrating a BrDR database using the Migration Wizard, the feedback returned from a coded migration step is not saved in the log.

  67. BSSD-3939 - MCB - Tendon Profile (Profile Tab) - Incorrect Span number getting set in profile tab grid.

  68. BSSD-3940 - LFD analysis failure for a PS member with interior diaphragm close to 1st support.

  69. BSSD-3941 - Time stamp on the 'Bridge Rating Results' window is reported as UTC rather than local time.

  70. BSSD-3951 - Steel Flexure Stress LRFR 6A.4.2.1 puts moment redistribution stresses in the wrong column.

  71. BSSD-3977 - Beginning in v7.3, for truss and girder floorbeam-stringer supers with more than 2 main members, 'Floorbeam Definition' window only shows 1 span.

  72. BSSD-3978 - Floorbeams not located correctly relative to reference line for TFS supers with more than 2 truss members resulting in 'Error Setting Steel Brace Moments' message.

 

Special Note on Hardware Requirements

The Hardware Requirements listed in the AASHTOWare Bridge® Startup Guide Step 5 and AASHTOWare Catalog are the requirements for typical bridge model. These requirements are highly dependent on the size of the model, the type of the bridge and the complexity of the analysis.
